Wake up your Makeup.

Tired of the same old makeup routine? If so, then try some of these makeup tips from Madonna's makeup artist, Gina Brooke, to wake up your existing look.

1. Do some resurfacing
Even the best makeup can't give you radiant skin so invest in some good facials especially ones that help remove dead skin cells. At home, try a product that minimizes the appearance of pores. Try Arcona Raspberry Clarifying Pads to minimize pores.
2. Focus on lashes
Use an eye lash curler to curl your lashes which really open up your eyes. Use mascara during the day and night. Try a Burgundy color mascara as it looks great with all eye colors. For added drama, grab some false lashes along the outer corners of upper lashes.
3. Go only halfway with liner
The most flattering line for nearly all eye shapes and depths starts at the lid's midpoint and tapers to the outer corner. Use a waterproof pencil or shadow stick that glides on easily.
4. Lighten up
Try Elizabeth Arden's  Eight Hour Cream to bring out the bone structure. Blend a drop of argan oil with concealer for a luminous look.
5. Get a power pout
A strong red mouth is one of the best looks for most women. Especially a red matte lip.  To make lips more pronounced, line the top of the upper one with concealer.

Cherry Red Lips!

Invest in a a Cherry Red Lipstick this Fall. It's a beautiful, sexy yet sophisticated look.
The key is to pick a color that compliments your skin tone. Use the guide below and some of my suggestions in picking a red color that is perfect for you.

Cherry Lips seen on fair, medium and dark skin tones

In order for your lipstick to be flawless, make sure to exfoliate your lips, line your lips with lip pencil, use a brush to apply your lipstick, and blot after applying to seal the color.

My Top Picks for Cherry Red Lipsticks
For Fair Skin:

MAC Russian Red, YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain, YSL Rouge Pur Couture in Golden Lustre

For Medium Skin:

Tom Ford Cherry Lush. Rich Lip Color by Bobbi Brown, MAC Ruby Woo
For Dark Skin:

MAC Hang Up, Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Lip Color in Coromandel, NARS

Favorite Look: Smoky Eyes

I love a smoky, sultry eye. There is something so very sexy about it.

It's my favorite go-to look for the evening. One can do a smoky eye with many colors - silvery grey, brown, purple and of course the traditional black!

Depending on what your mood is, you can go for one of these looks!
Smoky Eyes with Nude Lips: Demurely Sexy Look
Smoky Eyes with Red Lips: Overtly Sexy Look
Smoky Eye with Heavy Mascara: Glamorous Look
Smoky Eyes with Rosy Lips: Fresh Look

The key to the perfect smokey eye is proper blending. You want to make sure colors are blended together flawlessly. Also, it's important to pair light base colors with rich dark colors.

Here's a step by step guide on how to achieve a beautiful, smoky eye -

1. Pick a multitonal eye-shadow palette, like the one below. Prime your lid by patting on regular foundation — it'll form a base for your makeup to stick to.

2. Dip the tip of a dampened makeup brush into the darkest shadow, and draw a line across your upper and lower lash lines.

3. Before the shadow dries, look up and blink—this marks a line on your skin in the creases, which you'll want to fill up to with your contouring, medium shadow.

4. Rub the softest color in your palette above the creases and up to the brow bones to highlight.

5. Sweep the light, pearly shadow around the corners of your eyes to make them seem larger (you can even dust a little under your lower lashes to offset dark circles).

6. Trace on one last layer of the darkest color as liner, and smudge it with your finger or a cotton swab for a blurred effect.

7. For extra oomph, curl your lashes, and coat on the deepest, darkest mascara you can find.

Ahhh the joy of a good facial!

I had a facial this weekend and my skin feels pampered and refreshed.
I recently wrote about developing a skin care routine and if you are over the age of 30, consider having facials on a regular basis. Your skin would certainly benefit from a regular deep cleanse.

One mistake I made was to not have a relationship with one esthetician so when I started having issues with my skin, I was going crazy trying to figure out what to do. So if you do find an esthetician you like,  visit them regularly so they become familiar with your skin and can help you when you are having issues.

On my quest for looking for estheticians, I tried a few and really liked my last experience at a salon in Palo Alto.

Parasol Beauty Atelier
470 Hamilton Avenue
Palo Alto, CA

It's a small, quaint little salon that specializes in skin care and beauty treatments run by this lovely, knowledgeable lady called Julice.

She also has Laura working with her, who is new to the salon and is trying to build out her client base.  They recently did a Groupon for a Balancing Therapy Facial ($125 value) for $49 which she offered to extend to any of my readers. This is only valid with Laura.

I highly recommend it. I liked the skincare line they used and Laura was very knowledgeble and answered my gazillion questions very honestly and patiently!

If you don't live in my area, best way to find a good esthetician is through referrals so hope you find somebody you like and they treat your skin extra good 🙂

Wonders of Coconut Oil.

My hair and body were slathered in coconut oil as a child whether I liked it or not. My mother and grand mother used to say, its good for you! Little did I know that many years later, I will be writing a blog post about the benefits of using it 🙂

I love finding natural and all-purpose products for everyday situations and my latest re-discovery is coconut oil!
It is affordable, readily available and in its natural, unrefined state offers a myriad of benefits!

As far as topical application goes, coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-fungal and antimicrobial. It’s a great all-in-one product where just a little goes a long way.

While doing research, I learnt that coconut oil has so many benefits for beauty, general health and wellness, health problems, cooking, pets and other house hold uses. It really was quite an incredible list.

Since I haven't used it in all those capacities, I will only write about it from my personal experience.

Here are just a few beauty uses for virgin/unrefined coconut oil.

Makeup Remover: Smooth on and gently massage about a quarter sized amount of coconut oil onto your face and wipe off with a warm washcloth. Not only will this get rid of even the most stubborn makeup but your face will feel clean and moisturized after.
Face Wash: Mix equal parts coconut oil with olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil and castor oil and use in place of soap when washing your face. Wet face, rub oil in and leave on for two minutes, rinse and pat dry. One teaspoon should be adequate.
Lip Balm: Keep a small amount of solid coconut oil in a sealed container for an easy and inexpensive lip balm. Rub a little bit onto your lips to keep them from being chapped. Also, keep in mind that coconut oil stays in its solid state below 76 degrees (Fahrenheit) and starts to melt at anything above that so it may not be a good choice to keep in your bag in the summer months.
Eye Cream: apply under the eyes to reduce puffiness, bags and wrinkles. Use on the lids in the evening.

Deep Conditioner: Apply coconut oil onto your hair as a deep conditioner and leave it in from anywhere between 30 minutes to overnight to minimize the look and feel of split ends and have smoother and softer hair.
Cradle Crap: Coconut oil will not only nourish your baby’s skin, but also helps eliminate cradle cap. Just rub a teaspoon onto scalp daily.
Dandruff: Coconut oil soaks into the scalp moisturizing dry skin and relieves symptoms of dandruff. It also helps to control oil secretion from the scalp, another leading cause of dandruff.
De-frizzer: Rub a little between your palms and either scrunch into hair (for curly hair) or finger comb in through from scalp to ends (for wavy/straight hair).

Body Moisturizer: Slather on some coconut oil after your shower for softer skin.
Body Scrub: Mix it with sugar or sea salt and rub all over! Rinse off and your skin will be super soft! You can add in essential oils if you would like a specific smell.
Foot Treatment: If you have cracked heals or dry feet, spread coconut oil on clean feet and cover with socks for a soothing and moisturizing treatment.
Shaving Aid: Smooth on coconut oil for an easier shave that moisturizes your skin as well. This is perfect for those that have sensitive skin and can’t use or are irritated with other shaving creams.

Upcoming Launch: NARS & Thakoon

I love fun collaborations so here's one to look forward to for the summer.
Cosmetics company, NARS will soon be releasing a limited edition nail polish collaboration with famous fashion designer, Thakoon Panichgul.
Inspired by his Spring 2012 collection, colors found in an Indian spice market and the Holi festival of color, Thakoon’s polishes are available in six bold and rich shades.
  • Lal Mirchi, a bold orange mandarin red
  • Anardana, an azalea pink
  • Ratin Jot, an orchid purple
  • Amchoor, a bright yellow
  • Kutki, a powder blue
  • Koliary, a cyan blue
All colors are super saturated, full of shine and best of all: formaldehyde-free! Each polish will be sold for $18 at narscomesmetics.com and available on May 1st.
They will be perfect for the beach this summer and on exotic vacations. I can't wait to try the yellow one!

Makeup: Essentials, Brands & Looks.

Makeup is yet another form of self expression. It allows you to creatively express your mood.
When used correctly, makeup helps highlight your best features and makes you feel your best.
So use it to empower yourself, don't treat it as something only required to hide flaws and insecurities.
Have fun with it!

In this post, I'd like to share my list of makeup essentials, my favorite makeup brands for certain products and some of my favorite looks.
Makeup Essentials
Here's my list of essentials that every woman should have in her makeup kit, regardless of age.

1. Makeup brushes - the right brushes help you achieve the best application of makeup. Invest in some good brushes, its completely worth it.
My pick: MAC or Nars
2. Tinted Moisturizer - helps even out the skin tone and provides the canvas for the rest of your makeup.
My pick: Laura Mercier
3. Concealer - conceals blemishes, discolorations and other dark spots. Helps even out skin tone.
My pick: Cle de Peau
4. Under eye brightener - removes the dark under eye circles and evens out the skin tone.
My pick: YSL Touche Eclat
5. Eyebrow pencil - helps fill out any gaps in your brows.
My pick: Anastasia Brow Wiz
6. Tweezers - remove stray hairs on the face and shape your brows.
My pick: Tweezerman
7. Eyelash Curler - use to curl the eyelashes.
My pick: Shu Uemura

My Favorite Makeup Brands
Here's my list of brands that I love for certain products.
Laura Mercier - Awesome brand for base makeup like primer, tinted moisturizer, foundation, concealer, and under eye brightener.

NARS - This brand has highly pigmented makeup so is especially good for olive to dark skin tones. Their blushes are amazing.
MAC - Similar to NARS (highly pigmented) but cheaper in price. I love their lip glosses, eye shadows and water proof liquid eyeliner.

YSL - Absolutely love their lipsticks especially the Volupte Sheer Candy lipsticks. These lipsticks give the hydration of a lip balm with the shine and color payoff of a gloss.

Chanel - Very nice eye shadows especially the Illusion D'Ombre collection and Chanel Ombre D’eau Fluid Iridescent. These shadows glide across the lids with the greatest of ease.  Can be easily layered for higher impact.

Tom Ford
- small selection of lipsticks (only 12 shades) but fantastic colors. The formula is extremely creamy and is made of an exotic blend of
chamomilla flower, soja seed extract and Brazilian murumuru butter. I love the packaging too!

Christian Dior - Their 5 color eyeshadow palettes are amazing. The shadows are pigmented, smooth and come in great color combinations. Especially when you are travelling, you get 5 different colors that work well individually or can be used to achieve a cohesive look.

My Favorite Makeup Looks
Here are my three favorite looks achieved with makeup.

1. Natural: The natural makeup look is a look where you have applied makeup but it doesn't look like you are wearing it as it blends well with your complexion and the colors are all very soft and subtle.

2. Smoky Eye: Love this look for the evening. The focus is on the eyes so the rest of the face is fairly neutral. A smoky eye can be achieved with many different colors, not just black and grey.

3. Bold Lip: Bold lips can be worn during the day or night but its critical to wear lip liner to keep the color intact and to pick the right shade for your complexion. I would keep the rest of  my face pretty neutral to keep the focus on the lips.
